Though Papua is rich in their natural resources, Indonesians abuse and take control of this wealth. Forests are damaged, river pollution, and damaged environment near the area of mining. They have found gold in Serui Sea and have been exploiting it. Some of the world’s largest mining corporations have been active in exploiting West Papua’s oil and minerals. The environmental nature and surroundings are being destroyed by this very hour. The mountains, the land, and the trees are being mined and destroyed. | The resource industry with the widest impact in Papua is the logging industry. Logging companies which exploit and deceive local people are the ones impacting Papua and destroying the environmental sustainability. About half of Papua’s 22 million hectares is classified as “production forest.” The other resource industry in Papua is mining. The Freeport copper and gold mine is the most arguable foreign mining operation in Indonesia. The mine has been accused of join in human rights abuses by its military guards. |
Another significant natural resource in Papua is a natural gas project. Tangguh LNG, has the potential to become one of the world’s premiere natural gas supplies. The natural gas production is expected to have a major impact on the farmers and fishermen who live around the bay, also the community living in the towns of Sorong, Manokwari, and Fakfak.
This impact will mostly be positive, in the form of jobs, community development programs, but also there are negative impacts. Possible negative impacts on the environment are the risk of pollution of local fishing grounds by the project itself.
